9 Games Receive Funding from Norwegian Film Institute

Last week, 9 new games projects received a total of $1.1 million in funding from the Norwegian government through the Norwegian Film Institute’s game development funding program.

The Norwegian Film Institute (NFI) funds local game projects three times per year, and last week’s round saw 37 projects applying for funding, of which 9 got approved. The accepted projects can look forward to receiving up to 75% of their game’s development expenses in funding from NFI.

Of the 9 game projects that had to share this round’s $1.1 million in funding, 4 games received $150.000 or more. DragonBox Numbers, a math-centered learning game for iOS developed by WeWantToKnow received $220.000. So did Ravn Studio for their upcoming iOS and Android game, Kaptain Sabeltann and the treasure in Lama Rama, and Rain for the PC title, World to the West.

Last but not least, $150.000 was given to Red Thread Games for the development of their PC/MAC title, Draugen, which is set to launch a Kickstarter campaign very soon as well.

Both World to the West and Draugen have received funding from NFI previously. World to the West by Rain studio received $60.000 in May, 2014, and Draugen received $126.000 in October, 2013.

With only 9 games receiving funding, the vast majority of the applicants were left out this time, but according to Games production advisor at NFI, Kaja Hench Dyrlie, not only did this round of funding receive a lot of applications, but the quality of the games was also exceptionally high.

“The quality of the games applying for funding was once again very high, and there was a good spread and diversity in both the genres, platforms and target groups of the games.”, she says.
