Play X-seminar announced in Copenhagen

The Danish Film Institute announces play seminar, play x

Today, the game education DADIU, the Danish Film Institute, and Creative Europe announced the tenth annual Play seminar, to take place this October 1st. For the past 10 years, the Play-seminars, usually hosted at the Danish Film Institute in central Copenhagen, has been taking a long hard look at game development each fall, but with different themes each time. Previous Play-seminar themes include “Free2Play”, “storytelling in games”, “player engagement”, and “indie games”, to name a few.

In celebration of the 10 year anniversary of the Play seminar, the subject will this year be to look back on what has happened in the past 10 years, and where the games industry is going to be 10 years from now. As a consequence of the theme, this year’s seminar bears the title: “Play X – Coming of Age”. And according to the official description of the seminar, there has really been happening a lot in the Danish Games Industry since the first seminar in 2005.

“Ten years ago we missed a wider public support and a broader public recognition of video games. We framed games as an underground movement, talked a lot about AAA, violence and tough publishers, and then we witnessed small enterprises with the ambition of going professional and to professionalise. Politicians discussed whether video games could be seen as culture and considered it a commercial media for young boys. But where are we now? Has the industry become mature, or are we still way behind other cultural products? Have we arrived?”

The full speaker lineup has not yet been announced, but the organizers promise a full program available at the beginning of September. So far, Jonas Heide SmithMatt CostelloInga Von Staden, and Jesper Juul has been confirmed for the programme. And the seminar already has an official Twitter hashtag: #PlayX2014.

The seminar is free, but there is a limit of 150 seats, to be allocated on a first come, first served basis. The signup form for participation can be found here. Questions can be directed towards Maiken Høj, Information Officer at the Danish Film Institute.

Play X – Coming of Age takes place October 1st 2014, 9:00-16:30 at Bio Carl, The Cinematek, Gothersgade 55, 1123 Copenhagen K,
